  • Since 1820, Maine citizens have been represented by towering figures in our Country’s history. Our small state found relevance from the measured and mature guiding hand of those we elected.
Margaret Chase Smith, Bill Cohen, Jock McKernan, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe.
These are the names that form the bedrock of the Maine Republican tradition.
These Republican leaders came to know doing the right thing was not always the easiest course of action. They also knew that, if the facts were on their side and they used reason over misplaced emotion, they’d be showing respect to the Mainers they were proud to represent. And if you earn the respect of Mainers, anything is possible. The men of the 20th Maine Infantry held fast on Little Roundtop, not because they feared future Republican Governor General Joshua Chamberlain, but because they revered him.
With the great leaders who have come from our Party over its history, Republicans in Maine have been offered an invaluable birthright; the birthright of relevance, reason, and respect.
It is up to all of us to carry on that tradition.
